Adrienne Wahanui is the fleet manager for New Zealand Couriers Manukau Branch. Thanks to tailored training through Project Ikuna, she’s flourished with new confidence to take initiative, contribute her ideas and solve problems.
Adrienne also has new strategies that have changed how she leads every day.
Adrienne completed three micro-credentials, each with clear learning outcomes, and the combined outcomes led to transformational growth.
· Leadership Confidence
· Assertiveness and Confidence
· Conflict Resolution
“As a wahine, thesecourses have given me the strength and confidence to grow in this business,”says Adrienne.
Learning about Leadership and Assertiveness in a structured and grounded way has already had an impact.
“It’s helped withspeaking to the contractor fleet, use my initiative to talk to them and have avoice in a professional setting.”
NZ Couriers works todevelop its team from the ground up. People and Culture Manager Amanda Gordonsays both the individuals and the company benefit. “We've had some greatoutcomes from the programme in terms of getting more confident in their roles, feeling comfortable to speak up, and also progressing within their careershere”, she says.
Adrienne found it valuable to explore the roles and responsibilities of a leader in today’s workplace and what it takes to build an effective team. Part of the course involved uncovering her own leadership style and how it influences her management of others.
The course also offered techniques for motivating people and delivering clear communication and instructions, which were instantly applicable.
“Something that I learned in the course was how to resolve conflict, and it comes up every day atwork, explains Adrienne.
The ConflictResolution credential provides practical skills centred on managing and resolving disputes. The training is hands-on for participants to apply proven conflictresolution techniques in their daily work.
Learning includes understanding key causes and triggers of conflict, effective communication, de-escalation techniques, and collaborative solution-building. It means skills are workplace-ready and grounded in daily realities, all within the context of diverse teams and roles.
“I’ve been able tostart by identifying the conflict first. It gives me the opportunity to workthrough the situation and then come out with a great outcome.”
Adrienne says the training boosts both self-confidence and workplace confidence. Much of that is due to the Education Unlimited tutor creating such an engagingand safe learning environment.
“He let us know thateverything's okay. We won't always get it right, but he's there to support us.”
Amanda said the whole Education Unlimited team focused on ensuring the training matched NZ Couriers' needs.
“We have a greatworking relationship with Education Unlimited, and it’s bringing betteroutcomes for our people. The training is expanding people's horizons within thebusiness, making new connections and growing.”
“One of my favourite things is getting to the graduations to see the sense of accomplishment onthese people's faces and that massive sense of pride. They become ambassadorsfor the programme,” says Amanda.
Adrienne agrees and iskeen for others to enjoy the benefits too. “My hope in the future is thateveryone gets an opportunity to do micro-credential courses. For me, I want tocontinue to learn because you're never too old to do it.”
